Hannelore "Loki" Glaser was born on 3 Mar 1919 in Hamburg. She was the daughter of electrician Hermann Glaser and his wife Gertrud. Loki had a sister, Linde, and a brother, Christoph.[1]

Loki married Helmut Schmidt on 27 Jun 1942 in Hamburg (church wedding on 1 Jul 1942 in Hambergen, Niedersachsen). They had two children:[1]

  • Susanne (living).

Loki worked as a school teacher from 1940 to 1972. From 1974 to 1982, her husband, Helmut Schmidt, was the Bundeskanzler of the Bundesrepublik Deutschland. During this time, Loki started getting involved in environmentalist causes, in particular in the field of botany, her lifelong passion:[1]

  • In 1976, she founded the "Kuratorium zum Schutze gefährdeter Pflanzen", which eventually became the "Loki Schmidt Stiftung".[3][4]
  • She supported the new botanical garden in Hamburg, which opened in 1979. It was renamed "Loki-Schmidt-Garten" in 2012.[5]
  • In 1980, she established the "Blume des Jahres" campaign, a public awareness campaign for the protection of endangered wildflowers in Germany.[6]
  • In 1986, she initiated the "Stiftung Internationaler Gärtneraustausch".[7]
  • In 1997, she published the book Die Botanischen Gärten in Deutschland, featuring a complete overview of German botanical gardens and collections.[8] She also published other books about botanical topics as well as autobiographical books.[1]
  • In 2009, she became an honorary citizen of the city of Hamburg.[9][10]

Loki passed away on 21 Oct 2010 in Hamburg and is buried at Friedhof Ohlsdorf.[11][12]

Thanks a lot for your comment. I corrected the LNAB to Glaser. If you would like me to add you to the trusted list of that profile, please let me know.

The LNAB is Glaser, not Glasner (cf. Wikipedia article, grave marker, https://loki-schmidt-stiftung.de/loki-schmidt/, etc.).
