Biography

What We Know as of 10 Sep 2021 about Samuel G. “Squire” Glass And who we suspect are his parents

A recent finding of the 1800 US Federal Census St Clair Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States led me to revisit my 2nd Great-Grandfather's history:

We know that Samuel G Glass, "Squire", Justice of the Peace was born near Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania circa 1800. We know there were 3 Glass families in St Clair Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania according to the 1800 Census: John (approximate age 20) wife same approximate age and 1 son under the age 10, Samuel age 45+ wife age 45+ 2 sons between ages 16-25 1 daughter between ages 16-25, Andrew age 45+ wife age 45+ 1 son between ages 16-25. We know he married Susan Springer circa 1836, first child was born 1837 in Wilmington Delaware. We know that Samuel purchased a large parcel of land from the estate of Jeremiah Springer (wife Susan Springer's father) 18 Nov 1842 in Mill Creek Hundred, New Castle, Delaware, United States. We know that Samuel and Susan were in Putnam, Muskingum, Ohio by 23 Nov 1843 when Lizzie Glass was born, and that they stayed until around 1850 when they moved to Cherokee Flats, Butte County, California. We know that Cherokee Flats (aka: Cherokee is now a ghost town on top of Table Mountain near Oroville, Butte County, California. We know he died 1871 and was buried in Cherokee Flats and that daughter Sally had his remains reinterred in the Old Oroville Cemetery, Oroville, Butte County, California.

The family knew that Squire's parents immigrated from Glasgow Scotland and settled in the area Pittsburgh. What we now suspect is that the 3 Glass Families on the 1800 Census for St Clair Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania were all related and immigrated from Scotland together. The only family member showing young children are John and his wife, making them the most likely parents of Samuel G "Squire" Glass.

About St Clair Township, Pennsylvania

St. Clair Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, was one of the original townships created with the incorporation of Allegheny County in 1788. The township was named after Arthur St. Clair, an American Revolutionary War general and president of the Continental Congress in 1787. The township extended from the Ohio and Monongahela rivers to the southern county line. It was bounded on the west by Chartiers Creek and on the east partially by Streets Run. The township was subsequently divided between the northern part, Lower St. Clair Township, and the southern part, Upper St. Clair Township. The "upper" and "lower" referred to the elevation, as Lower St. Clair bordered on the river, the lowest elevation, and Upper St. Clair extended into the South Hills of Pittsburgh. The original Lower St. Clair Township consisted of the present-day neighborhoods of the City of Pittsburgh south of the Monongahela and Ohio, and all or parts of Green Tree, Carnegie, Baldwin, and other boroughs and townships in the South Hills. The township was subdivided several times, and today exists only as the neighborhood of St. Clair in the City of Pittsburgh. Upper St. Clair Township, subdivided many times, still exists in the South Hills of Pittsburgh. [1]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Sam by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Sam:
