Birth
Another researcher concluded that Charles' mother's last name was actually "Taylor". Searching sources supporting this assertion.
Charles' 1775 birth is mentioned in his 1814 marriage to Mary Arnett..[6]
Charles, son of John Glasscock, was born July 20, 1775, and died in February, 1840. In his young manhood he came with his father and uncle to the present territories of the state of West Virginia. Settling on Indian Creek, in Grant district, he was a miller[7]
The Glassco book stated repeatedly that Charles Glasscock was a miller.
Arrival
John Glasscock was a Patriot in the American Revolution. With his brother Hezekiah and his son Charles, John came about 1800 from Fauquier County and settled on Pharaoh's Run, in present-day Marion County, Virginia. Later they settled on Indian Creek, Monongalia County, on the Benjamin J. Miller farm. At this place, John Glasscock, his wife, and one daughter are buried on the Miller Farm. (Note that we are as yet unsure which of John's wives are buried with him).[8]
Charles's father, John GLASSCOCK Jr. was a Revolutionary Patriot. He furnished 206 lbs of common flour in one barrel, was paid 108 pounds and 8 shillings on 25 Oct 1780 (certified by Col. Wm EDMUNDS, page 6 of the Fauquier County Public Service Claims Lists). His brothers George, Thomas and Hezekiah GLASSCOCK also furnished supplies of beef and rye for army use, and are listed in the Claims Records.[9]
US census records for 1810-1830 are practically useless as they provide only hashmark accounting and nothing more about occupants. Nevertheless, they show a Charles Glasscock is managing a family and farmhands (slaves) in Fauquier County, Virginia for close to decades. All three of these United States Federal Census for Charles Glasscock in Fauquier County, Virginia, are provided by Ancestry.com.[12][13]
The Glassco book confirms that Glasscocks were a leading slave-owning family in Plantation America. An 1820 census record of Fauquier County, Virginia, shows a Charles Glasscock living in a household with seven white members and five slaves.
According to the Glassco book (pp 76-84), Charles & Mary had 13 children: Elizabeth, Stephen (1816-1860) Andrew (1818-1926), Letitia m. Aaron Kern (1849) John (1821-1892) William (1826-1919) Daniel (1828-1910) Minerva/Arnett (1831-1902) Juda m. Arthur C Melette (1831-1902) Charles (1833-1909) Imlah (1837-1924)
Both Charles' sons, Stephen 1816 & Charles 1833, marry Hess women. Stephen's wife comes through Balzar Hess b. 1784. Charles' wife comes through Daniel Hess b. 1829. Both Hess women are granddaughters of Peter Hess (1755-1833) of Monongalia, VA.
