Biography

Lewis Glatfelter has German Roots.

Lewis, son of Charles Glatfelter and Leah Klinedinst (or Kleindienst), was born 20 October 1843 in North Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania.[1][2] He grew up in Codorus Township, where in 1860, his father cultivated the land.[3] The household then included his parents Charles (age 46) and Leah (46), Lewis (16, a farmhand), and his siblings Charles (15), Sebilla [sic] (13), Peter (11), Leah (10), Ruban [sic] (8), George (6), Ephraim (4) and Henry (9 months).[3]

On 15 February 1863 in North Codorus Township, he married Isabella Kerchner, daughter of John Bailey Kerchner and Elizabeth Behler.[1] Together they had eight children—five of whom died in early childhood—and fostered another.

And their foster son:

  • Rev. Henry David "Harry" Newcomer (b. 18 July 1870;[13] m. Mary Amanda Bowman;[14] m. possibly Christiann Barbara Maurer;[citation needed] d. 25 March 1950).[13]

Lewis owned a home farm of 100 acres and an additional 60 acres adjoining it in Codorus Township.[1] On it the family consisting of Lewis (age 25, farmer), his wife Isabella (31) and daughters Emma (6) and Lucy (3) lived in 1870.[15] By 1880, a son—Anders (9)—and foster son—Henry Newcomer (age 11, given as Newman)—were added to Lewis (36, farmer), Isabel (41), Emma (15) and Lucian (13).[10]

Lucy Ann and Emma married in 1887,[8][6] Henry in 1898[14] and his wife Isabella died in early 1900.[16] This left Lewis (age 57, farmer) alone with a maid servant in Jefferson Borough, Corordus Township, in 1900.[2]

On 9 June 1901 in York County, he remarried to Isabella's younger sister Matilda (Kershner) Olp.[17] In 1910 the couple lived in Hellam Township, York County: Lewis K. (age 66, farmer) and Matilda (age 63).[18]

He died 13 March 1916 and was buried in Shaffers Church Cemetery in Seven Valleys, York, Pennsylvania.[19] His second wife Matilda survived another two years, dying 3 September 1918.[20] She was buried near him.[20]

The memorial says she died in August, the cenotaph says 22 February and names her mother as Sarah. Gibson does state that Lewis and Isabella had a daughter named Rose who had died before publication of the book in 1886.
