Biography

This profile is part of the Labossiere Name Study.

Joseph Jean d'Avila Glaude was born at St-Theodore d-Acton, Quebec on Nov. 17, 1883 and he was baptized there the next day. [1] He was the second child of three and the second of three sons of George Labossière and Aurelie Roy. His surname, Glaude come from his father having adopted this name in later life in honour of being descended from Pierre-Louis Claude Labossiere who was the patriarch of the junior branch of the Labossiere family in North America.

His family moved to Maine sometime before 1900 and his father also died before 1900 and his mother remarried and they moved to Woonsocket, RI.

1900 US Census Maine York Biddeford Ward 4 ED 226 Sheet 25A Lines 13-18: Aurelie Glaude (Roy), 41 widow; three Glaude sons: Philip, 18; Ovila, 16; Odias, 15; niece, Emma Roi, 16; nephew, Victor Roi, 18. [2] Census date: June 16, 1900.

Ovila Glaude married Virginie Beausoleil about Nov. 1909 most likely at Woonsocket, RI. She was the daughter of Alfred Beausoleil and Hermeline Beaudoin and she was also born in Quebec. In 1910, they are living with Ovila's mother and his stepfather. They had seven children, six boys and a girl.

1910 US Census Rhode Island Providence Woonsocket Ward 5 ED 295 Sheet 7A Lines 27-36: Narciss DesMichel, 52; Anrelie DesMichel (Aurelie Roy), 57; Philip Gloude (Glaude), 27; Ovila Gloude (Glaude), 25 married 5 months- teamster, framing co.; five boarders; Virginia Gloude (Beausoleil), 23 married to Ovila. [3] Census date: April 20, 1910

In Sept. 1918, Ovila Glaude was required to register for the draft for World War I. [4] There is no record he ever served. In 1917 he was already living at 587 Social St. in Woonsocket where he still was in 1935.

Based on the 1920 and 1930 US censuses, the family moved back to Quebec for several years and two children were born there in 1914 and 1916. They returned to Woonsocket later in 1916. [5]

[6] Census date: Jan. 29, 1920.

1930 US Census Rhode Island Providence Woonsocket Ward 5 ED 299 Sheet 3A Lines 15-23: Ovila Glaude, 46 truck driver; Virginie Glaude (Beausoleil), 45; seven Glaude children: Omer, 19; Theodore, 17; Patrick, 15; Marie Blanche, 13; Lionel, 12; Sylvio, 11; Armand, 10. [7] Census date: April 8, 1930.

1940 US Census Rhode Island Providence Woonsocket Ward 5 ED 4-296 Sheet 17B Lines 45-49: Ovila Glaude , 55 chauffeur, private; Virginie Glaude (Beausoleil), 55; three adult Glaude sons: Lionel, 22 driver, taxi; Sylvio, 21 driver, ice truck; Armond, 20 new marker. [8] Census date: April 13, 1940.

Virginie Beausoleil died at Woonsocket, RI on October 24, 1948. [9] She was buried there in the Precious Blood Cemetery. She was 63 years old.

Ovila Glaude died at Woonsocket on Dec. 26, 1957. He was buried in Saint Jean-Baptiste Cemetery at Bellingham, Norfolk, Massachusetts instead of at Woonsocket with his wife. It appears to be a family plot as some of his children are with him. [10] He was 74 years old. The findagrave memorial also has his obituary.
