Modesta was born on 30 March 1879 in Richmond, Chittenden, Vermont, USA. She was the daughter of Patrick Gleason and Catherine Harrington.^[1]

Modesta married Patrick Gleason on 8 October 1867 in Richmond, Chittenden, VT. The couple had 8 children: Kate Gleason, Catherine Jane Freeman, Martin John Gleason, Mary Beatrice Gleason, Agnes Clair Gleason, Thomas Bernard Gleason, Modesta Ellen ( Maude) Leary and Modesta Ellen (Maude) Gleason.^[2]
