Biography

This profile is part of the Gleason Name Study.

George, son of Arthur DeWitt Gleason and his third wife Ione Viola Eckert,[1] was born 12 September 1921[2] in Great Barrington, Massachusetts.[3] He grew up in Lee, Massachusetts, where his father was a carpenter.[4] In 1930, the family consisted of his parents Arthur (60) and Ione (28); George R. (8); and his siblings Clyde A. (6, b. Florida) and Donald W. (1).[4]

The family remained in Lee in 1940, when the members included Arthur (70, retired), Ione (37), George (18), Clyde (16), Donald (11) and Joan (2).[5] (The three older children were all in school.)[5] His father died the following year.[6]

On 4 July 1942 in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, he married Leila Elizabeth Halsey,[7] daughter of Frank Allis Halsey and Emma Pulver.[8] Together they had one daughter.[7]

He enlisted as a private in the U.S. Army at Fort Devens, Massachusetts on 26 June 1944 for service during the Second World War.[3] His civilian occupation was listed as "toolmakers and die sinkers and setters."[3]

Following the war, he returned to working as a draftsman for General Electric Company for 46 years, retiring in 1986.[7]

George was a member of the Berkshire Union Chapel, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, and Lanesborough Volunteer Fire Department.[7]

He died 9 May 2010 in Lee, Massachusetts[2] and was buried in Mountain View Cemetery.[9]
