Biography

Born 1864 Hull

Jane Ann Gleadhill or Gledhill is born in Hull about 1863. Two different Janes are born within 18 months. [1] [2]

Schoolgirl 1871 Hull

In 1871 when Jane is six, Ezra Gleadhill is recorded as a mariner, but we are not told what sort of mariner; the fact that he is with his family may indicate that he is still a lighterman, never leaving the port, or less probably a sloopman generally making short trips in the Humber.

His two younger children, Jane 6 and Sarah 4 are both scholars, but the older two Mary E 11 and William 8 apparently are not. The Act of Parliament making education to 14 compulsory would be passed that year, 1871.

This is the same address as ten years earlier for the Tates). all seven are born in Hull. [6]
