Biography

Kathleen Mary Gleeson was born on 26th March 1917 in Rathmacan, Kilmanagh, Kilkenny, Ireland to parents Thomas Gleeson (farmer) and Frances Pollard ^[1].

Kathleen’s siblings are John, Michael, Ann, Betty and Maureen.

Kathleen met (and probably dated) William ‘Bill’ Fitzgerald, however at some point Kathleen moved to Dublin to work as a cook for a family and even experienced the bombings of Dublin during World War II in 1941 ^[2] Upon Kathleen’s return the pair met once again and within 6 months they were married. ^[3]

On 26th February 1952, Kathleen married William Fitzgerald in Tullaroan, Kilkenny, Ireland. They were Married by Father Patrick Bollard CC in Church of the Assumption. Sponsors were Bills brother Michael Fitzgerald and Elizabeth Purcell (Kathleen's Cousin). ^[4].

Kathleen and William had five children together including Living Fitzgerald and lived in Jessfield, Ballingarry, Tipperary.

Her husband William passed away on 29th September 2011 at the age of 93. They had been married for 59 years. ^[5]

Kathleen passed away on 08th April 2013 at the age of 96. ^[6]

Research Notes

Kathleen was named as Catherine on the birth registration however family called her Kathleen. ^[7]

Some marriage notes are badly written and the place of marriage ‘Tullaroan’ often can be misread as ‘Tullarvan’.

There are two Fitzgerald families in Ballingarry, making it hard to decipher which family is which in records. The farmland is in Jessfield, Ballingarry however it is also noted as Modeshil on the census records. The Barony is Slievardagh.
