When Margaret Patterson was born on 8 May 1859 in Hetton Downs, Durham, her father, Ralph, was 34, and her mother, Margaret, was 33. She married John Thompson in September 1876 in Houghton Le Spring, Durham. They had 12 children in 26 years. She had two sisters.
