Biography
John was likely born in 1825, although sources conflict on this. British census records suggest he was born in 1822 to 1823, [1] 1824 to 1825, [2] or 1825 to 1826. [3] An unsourced online tree gives a birthdate of 7 April 1825. [4]
Regardless, John was christened in the parish church of Allendale St. Cuthbert on 11 June 1825. [5]
As a boy, his father moved the family from the lead mines of Allendale to the coal mines of Medomsley, Durham. He married Esther (Greggs) Glenwright in Medomsley St. Mary Magdalene on 6 Mar 1847.
He emigrated to Australia in 1877, his son Thomas preceding him in 1871. He passed away in 1884.
In his younger life, John was a coal miner, [2] but by middle age he had moved to Tow Law, Durham and become a grocer. [3]
