Biography

Jonathan Glidden is the son of Captain Richard Glidden, who died in Exeter, New Hampshire October 5, 1728. His father married about 1686, Sarah _____ who survived her husband and conveyed "a pare of ye home place" in Exeter to her son, Richard Glidden, Jr. [1]

Jonathan and his brother, Andrew served in the British Army, under Captain John Gilman, who marched on August 16, 1710, in the service of the Province of New Hampshire. Jonathan's name was originally omitted from the Captain Gilman's muster roll, however, it was published in the Journal of the House of Representatives for New Hampshire, on Thursday, April 28, 1726, as an account of "men ye was Mist & not Entred."

Jonathan was a member of the Society of Friends (aka The Quakers) of Brentwood, Rockingham county, New Hampshire, prior to October 21, 1756. [2]

On December 31, 1729, in Rockingham county, New Hampshire, Jonathan married Margaret Bean, daughter of Jeremiah Bean and Ruth (Johnson) Bean. They were were Quakers who lived at Epping in Rockingham Couny, New Hampshire, and the parents of eight children, all born at Epping. Jonathan Glidden was one of the inhabitants of the north westerly part of the town of Exeter who petitioned to the governor, council and house of representatives of New Hampshire to be incorporated as the parish of Epping, 15 Jan. 1741.[4] He took an active part in the organization of the town of Deerfield, and at the first town meeting held there, on January 30, 1766, he was chosen as an assessor. At the next annual town meeting, on March 17, 1767, he was chosen as a selectman, and again in 1768.
