Biography

Tobias Glidden, son of Joseph and Mary (Smart) Glidden, was born about 1720.[1]

He married Miriam Chapman; while the marriage date, of which no original record is known, has been estimated at about 1758[1], records show the existence of a daughter, Mary, who died at age 23 -- after a brief marriage to Zaccheus Hatch of Jefferson, Maine -- and whose birth must have occurred by about 1753, implying her parents' marriage by that year. A 1753 marriage appears reasonable given that Tobias Glidden was born in about 1720[2], and Miriam Chapman was born in 1728[3]. The estimated marriage year of 1758 -- when Tobias was 38 years of age and Miriam 30, far above the average -- has presumably been based on the birth of daughter Lydia in 1759... unless it is the result of some earlier mistranscription of 1753. A marriage by early 1753 of a 33-year-old and a 25-year-old yields a more reasonable scenario.

Tobias died in June 1818 in Damariscotta, Lincoln County, Maine.[1]

Their children were born in the vicinity of Damariscotta.[1]

Children of Tobias and Miriam

  1. Lydia b. 1759
  2. Mary m. Zaccheus Hatch.
  3. Huldah b. 5 Jan. 1764
  4. Nathaniel b. 1766.
  5. Hannah m/ William Nutt.
  6. Robert died young.
  7. John married Hussey.
  8. William b. 24 Nov. 1774.
  9. Betsey m. int. Jacob Hodgdon.[4]

Note that the undated birth of daughter Mary, in the above listing published in 1925, must in fact have occurred by about 1753 -- given her reported death at age 23 and the fact that her marriage to Zaccheus Hatch is recorded as his first, his second occurring in late 1777. See Zaccheus's profile for a full explanation.
