DEATH OF AN OLD COLONIST.
THE LATE MR. G. W. LEAKE.

Mr. George Walpole Leake, Q.C., whose name is written large upon the history of this colony, is dead. [...] Mr. Leake was born in England in 1826, and arrived in this colony with his mother, Mrs. Luke Leake, in the ship Cygnet, on January 27, 1833, his father at the time being engaged in pioneering on the Swan. [...] After a lengthened absence, he returned to his adopted country but left it again, a few months after for Adelaide, where he studied the law. It was while he was in the neighboring colony that he met Miss Rose Ellen Gliddon, to whom he was married in September, 1850, returning with his bride to this colony a few months subsequent to that date. [...] Mr. Leake was married again in 1891 (his first wife having been dead some years before), to Miss May, of Adelaide, and; in addition to his first family of eight, he leaves an infant daughter.

His eldest daughter married the late Dr. Parry, Bishop of Perth, and the second was married to Colonel Skinner, C.B., and the third to Mr. S. H. Parker, Q.C. The fourth child was Mr. George Leake, M.L. A., leader of the Opposition, who was the only son, whilst-there were seven daughters, including, besides those already mentioned, Mrs. T. S. Lodge, Mrs. R. C. Clifton, Mrs. W. K. Adam, and Mrs. Kelsall. [4]

Excerpts from the Obituary of Mr. George Walpole Leake, Q.C.
The Daily News (Perth, WA) 4 October 1895.

Some notes about R.E. Leake written in the 1960s by her great-granddaughter Constance Berryman:

Sarah Constance Lodge was […] one of the seven daughters (plus 2 sons) of George Walpole Leake & Rose Ellen Leake (née Gliddon), and was educated in Perth — for a time, I think, in The Cloisters, & later in Adelaide, from which city her mother had come. […] Rose Ellen was an invalid for many years, & my grandmother resented the fact that two children were born after her health was gone. After her death G.W.L married at 60 add a girl forty years his junior, & died soon after. Most of his considerable estate was left to his widow & she & her yong daugter went to England to live. G.W.L.'s brother Sir Luke was childless, & after his death Lady Leake married Dr. Whaler, & willed all Luke's money to her own side of the family.
