Biography

Thomas A. Glover grew up and lived in the same community of Marengo County, Alabama and served in the same regiment along side William Thomas Nichols. After returning from the war Thomas Glover married William's widow Susan Nichols. One wonders and can only speculate, it being his first marriage and she being 12 years his senior with five children, was it a death bed promise to look after William's widow? Was it born form the horrific times, the devastation of the war and loss in the community precipitating a need for comfort and support? Or did love come in to play at all? As it is, we find from the family Bible that they had one daughter together, Susan Virginia, who soon passed away as did his wife Susan shortly thereafter. From the 1870 Federal Census it doesn't appear that Thomas was home at this time but was possibly working in another state. Thereafter, we find him remarried and living in Texas in the same county where his step children also migrated to. More research would need to be done to discover how they got there, was it a family decision? Did they travel together? Most certainly the devastation left from the war on their families, property, and lives may have caused them to seek a new start and better times.

Ancestry: Thomas Aquilla Glover, according to family lore, drove cattle on the Chisholm Trail sometime after 1865 and perhaps as late as 1875. Thomas was a Confederate soldier from Alabama during the Civil War. After the war, he tried some farming in Alabama, then supposedly worked some fishing boats on the Texas Gulf coast before working cattle. In 1875, he married Mary Margaret (Mollie) Hodges (or Hodge) in Robertson County, Texas. By 1883 they were having children and living in or near Ranger, Texas. His daughter, Sarah Ellen, was born in 1888 and other children were born into the early 1890s. Mollie Hodges was apparently from Palo Pinto County and was 1/4 Cherokee.
