Hello John,

Thanks for self-certifying for the Pre-1700 badge! Collaboration with Pre-1700 Project members is essential for those wishing to edit Pre-1700 profiles. Collaboration is essential because those ancestors are usually shared by many descendants.

It looks like the England Project would be a good fit based on your branch of WikiTree. Review the project page to learn about resources and guidelines as well as how to collaborate with the project members.

Do you have any questions? Let me know. I'm happy to help! :-)

Remember to cite reliable sources in pre-1700 profiles that you manage or edit. (See: Pre-1700 Reliable Sources).

Hi,

Thanks for your helpful suggestions, greatly appreciated. As I become more involved I have better appreciated the need for reliable references and sources. I have started with the easier ones locally and will continue as I work backwards. As a new-comer to WikiTree I am still learning the fine detail and have appreciated the obvious fellowship of fellow members. Suggestions are always helpful so I trust I am improving. Hasten slowly is my new mantra. Sincerely, John

P.S. To find reliable sources for your profiles, go to the Family Tree & Tools tab; select Genealogy Research and scroll down near the bottom of that list and select Research with RootsSearch. There are over 20 websites to access from there.

Hi Cheryl,

Thank you for your welcome and helpful advice. The generosity of fellow genealogists is a remarkable feature of our hobby and it continues in WikiTree.

I am venturing slowly so have not yet fully explored WikiTree. My goal is to load as many names as possible on my tree so that I might maximise my interaction within WikiTree. I tried to upload a GEDCOM but it was too large (10,000 names) so a compiled a smaller version and am finalising all those details. So far it has taught me to progress slowly, pay more attention to detail and to be more meticulous with source information. These are all good skills to cultivate so that has been rewarding.

I venture in and out of genealogy rather than devote a prolonged period to it, partly because of other research interests. Here in Australia, we are preparing to honour ANZAC Day plus the Centenary of the RAAF later this week. As a 40 year Air Force veteran I have been inundated with requests to speak and the research before each speech is challenging but rewarding. I have made a few unexpected discoveries along the way so that has been very exciting.

I am sure that as I become more familiar with the WikiTree process I shall have occasion to contact you again.

Thank you, again, for your gracious welcome and generous support.

Kind regards, John

PS There is a tool that can help with cleaning up GEDCOM created biographies. It lets you concentrate on the genealogy rather than the formatting. You can read more about it in the WikiTree AGC FAQ.

Hello again, John,

How you can break up your GedCom depends on where it will be imported from. Most websites allow you to break up a tree into several GedComs. Ancestry does not so extra steps are needed. I would like to suggest that for your first GedCom import, you might want to create a very small one - maybe 25 people. Get those through the GedCompare process and entered into your branch of the tree. Once you have done that, create another one a bit larger and continue on up your tree. Importing very large GedComs creates a lot of work on matching and cleaning up the biographies. Many people think it is easier to create profiles one at a time, source, do the biography and then more to the next one. Once you try a small import, you can make that decision.

I hope this helps and please ask as questions arise - we are all here to help!

Thanks for your welcome.

I tried to import my Gedcom file but there are too my names. I am now trying to work out how to reduce the file so that it can be imported.
