Hard Times

On Wednesday the 8 October 1902 at 12 o'clock, Henry was admitted to Greenwich Union Workhouse on the Woolwich Road in Kent [10]. He was recorded as being 52 years old. He was with his 7 year old son Daniel (who was 9 according to his birth record), and his daughters Cecilia, 10 and Rose, 4. They were admitted because Henry, a labourer, had no home. Their religion was Church of England and their parish was 'P'. They were seeking relief because they had been removed from Saint Olaves. The family were discharged on the same day. In Henry's case he was discharged at 8 o'clock by Alfred Ayling, 64, to the parish of 'P'.[11] The entries were as follows:
{| border="1"

!Date!!Day of the Week!!Time of Admission!!By whose Order Admitted!!Date of Order of Admission |- |1902 October 8 ||Wednesday ||12.0||Master ||1902 Oct 8th |}

{| border="1"

'P' was probably Poplar because this parish was part of Greenwich Union, but could also be Saint Paul, Deptford, because the family did live there.

The next day, Thursday 9 October 1902, Henry was admitted to the Greenwich Hospital and Infirmary at Vanburgh Hill S.E.10, Greenwich. He was a labourer. His first meal was breakfast suitable for a male under 60. His parish was Saint Paul. [12] He was discharged on the 4 November 1902 'To House' at his own request, together with his son Henry who was 28. [13]

Last Years

Henry passed away on the 13 January 1930 at 390, High Street, Catford, Lewisham, County of London, England. He lived at 6, Albacore Crescent, Lewisham and he was a retired counterman at a wholesale chemists. His age was 77 years. The cause of death was carcinoma (or cancer) of the colon.
