OBITUARY MR. THOMAS ASH GODDARD. Mr. Thomas Ash Goddard, who died at his home at River street,Maclean, was associated with the district's building trade for more than 60 years. The late Mr. Goddard was born in Grafton, and was a son of Mr. Thomas Ash Goddard. He re- ceived his early education at Grafton and went to Maclean with his parents at the age of 11. His father, who was a bricklayer, engaged in business as a building contractor. One of the first brick buildings he erected in Maclean was his home in Taloumbi street, more than 66 years ago. Thomas, who was a young lad then, worked with his father for a number of years, building most of the bakers' ovens in different coastal towns and the brickwork and chimney stacks of the small sugar mills, which grew like mushrooms dur-ing the 70's and early 80's, on the Clarence. On the death of his father he carried on the bricklaying trade. For several years he was also engaged in farming on the property now owned by Mr. Allan Ryan, on the Harwood road, having selected the hill portion of the property.
Some of the buildings the lateMr. Goddard constructed, or helped to construct, are the brick works of the Maclean Hotel, Savage's, Blair's, Olive's bakery, Wicks' building, Owl Stores, and the isolation block of the local hospital. He was joined by his sons, John Clarence and Thomas, for several years, carrying oh the business under the name of Thos. Goddard and Sons. He eventually handed the business over to his two sons. It was the intention of the late Mr Goddard to retire when he handed the business over to his sons, but because of the labor shortage, he carried on in Maclean for a further number of years, working for local contractors. He was a first-class tradesman, who took a great pride in making all his work thorough.
During the last few years he lived in retirement at his home, taking up vegetable growing, as a hobby. He was a keen horticulturist and a lover of flowers, particularly roses. For years he judged the flower section at the Maclean Shows, and when not judging, exhibited roses and fruit grown in his garden.
For more than 45 years he took a very keen interest in the public life of town and district. He served as an alderman of the Maclean Municipal Council and was several times Mayor. He was a president of the Lower Clarence Agricultural Society and one of the Showground trustees. After the last world war he was appointed Government nominee on the Repatriation Committee. He was also a Justice of the Peace. In his young days he kept a team of horses and dogs for kangaroo hunting. The late Mr. Goddard was also known as an ardent supporter of cricketing and football, being amember of club executives andselection committees. He was an ardent churchman and a superintendent of the Methodist Sunday School. He held various offices in the church.
Deceased married Catherine, eldest daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Cameron, of Maclean, who survives him. He is also survived by two daughters, Mrs. Edward Davis (Seelands), and Miss Lily Goddard (Maclean), and four sons, John Clarence and Thomas (both of Grafton), Lindsay (Five Dock, (Sydney), and Gordon Goddard (Clerance Town). The funeral took place in the Methodist portion of the Maclean cemetery on Friday, the funeral service being conducted by Rev. Oliver, assisted by the Manchester Unity Order of Oddfellows, of which deceased was a prominent member. The four sons and two grandsons, Messrs. Charles Goddard and E. Davis, were pallbearers. Many floral tributes were placed on the grave.[4]
