Sarah was born between July 1 and September 24, 1865, in Devizes.[1] She was christened at the Church of St. Mary the Virgin in Devizes, Wiltshire, on 24 September 1865.[2][3][4][5]
The 1871 England and Wales Census lists Sarah as the 5 year old daughter of James and Maria Godden, living at home in the Parish of St. Mary in Devizes and working as a scholar. Their street address was 81 New Park St.[6][7]
The 1891 England and Wales Census lists Sarah as a 25 year old single woman living in the household of Mr. and Mrs. Matthew Henry Bevan and their seven children in Gravesend, Kent. Her occupation is recorded as general servant domestic.[8]
The 1901 England and Wales Census lists Sarah as a 32 year old woman living with her husband, Sidney, their three children (Daisy, Beatrice, and Albert), and her older brother, James , in the Parish of Holy Trinity in Frome, Somerset.[9]
