Biography

When Othello Washington Godfrey was born on February 7, 1846, in Johnston, Rhode Island, his father, Samuel Godfrey, was 26 and his mother, Phebe Jane (Hicks) Godfrey, was 22. He moved 4 times during his lifetime. He lived in Seekonk, Massachusetts, in 1850 and moved to Johnston, Rhode Island, by 1920. He had three brothers and six sisters. He died on December 3, 1934, in Rhode Island, at the age of 88.

In June, Othello W Godfrey was enumerated in house #7. His rank was private, and his company was A in 1st Rhode Island Cavalry. He reported that he was enlisted on December 4, 1861 and was discharged on December 3, 1864. He served for 3 years.[1]

1900 • Cranston, Providence, Rhode Island, United States

On June 8th, Othello W Godfrey, age 54, house painter, born in Rhode Island, was enumerated as the head of household, renting a home on Crawford Street. Also in home were his wife, Anna M Godfrey, age 51, born in New Hampshire, and his sister-in-law, Margaret Regan, age 41, woolen mill superintendent, born in Rhode Island. Othello W and Anna M Godfrey had two children together, but both were deceased sometime before 1900.[11]

Othello W Godfrey, age 59, painter, born in Johnston, Rhode Island, was enumerated as the head of household. Also in home was his brother, Elisha W Godfrey, age 48, carpenter, born in Providence, Rhode Island.[12]

1920 • Johnston, Providence, Rhode Island, United States

On or after January 2nd, Othello Godfrey, age 74, painter, widowed, born in Rhode Island, was enumerated as the head of household, renting a home at 489 Morgan Avenue.[13]

1930 • Johnston, Providence, Rhode Island, United States

On April 15th, Othello Godfrey, age 85, widowed, was enumerated as the head of household, renting a home for $7 on Morgan Mills.[14]

Death

Othello Washington Godfrey died on December 3, 1934 in Rhode Island.[15]

Burial

Othello W. Godfrey was buried at North Burial Ground in Providence, Providence County, Rhode Island.[16]
