Louis Nicolas Gaudin dit Lapoterie was born on 10 Jun 1725 and baptized the following day at Notre-Dame-de-Québec, Canada, Nouvelle-France, as the son of Nicolas Gaudin and Marie Madeleine Gilbert.
[1][2]
Nicolas (as Nicolas Gaudin dit Poterie) married Marie Madeleine Morier on 24 Apr 1747 at Notre-Dame-de-Québec.
[2][3][4]
Marie Madeleine and Nicolas had at least sixteen children together from 1747 through 1769, four of whom are known to have married between 1771 and 1788 (including one daughter Maire Barbe, and three sons Louis Nicolas, Barthelemy and Joseph), one son who lived into his seventies but is not known to have married (Jean Baptiste), and eleven children who died shortly after birth or within their first several years. [4]
Nicolas died on 3 Dec 1809 and was buried at Notre-Dame-de-Montréal, in what was then the Province of Lower Canada (Bas-Canada). His wife Marie Madeleine had predeceased him (in 1780) but he was survived by several children and grandchildren. [2][4]
Research Notes
Note regarding family surname: Gaudin (versus Godin):
Although certainly indexes have listed the surname for Louis Nicolas Gaudin and son Barthelemy Marie Gaudin using the name of Godin, that alternative or potentially standardized spelling is not supported in either their original birth records nor in their marriage records. Each did use a version of their "dit" name Lapoterie in connection with their marriages – but neither used "Godin":
- Louis Nicolas Gaudin was baptized as Louis Nicolas Gaudin and married as Nicolas Gaudin dt (dit) Lapoterie (see note under marriage record below in connection with scripting of text)
- Barthelemy Marie Gaudin was baptized as Barthelemy Marie Gaudin and married as Barthelemy Gaudin dit Lapoterie
Last names at birth (LNABs) for both have been corrected to Gaudin, dit name added; later standardized spelling included as other name for search purposes.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Nicolas by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Nicolas:
Last Name at Birth (LNAB) - and therefore file ref - should be corrected to Gaudin to match his baptismal record.
