Biography

Godman

Humphrey was born about 1690. It is believed that this Humphrey came from England; but that hasn't yet been proven. He married Mary (Jones) Kirkland on the 10th of February 1710, in Anne Arundel County, Maryland.[1] Their first three sons were born in Anne Arundel County by the year 1715.[2][3] His son William was born in the year 1721.[4]

Humphrey is found in several of the early Maryland records. In 1716, Humphrey was found in the Maryland Provincial Court Records.[5][6] He had purchased the Jacobite James Hill,[7] to keep as a servant, for James' part in rebellion against England. The term of this service was seven years. In the year 1722 a deed is found between Samuel Poole and Humphrey Godman, where 115 pounds was paid by Samuel.[8]

Deed Signature

The following year one Mingo Savoy bound his daughter Judy to Humphrey, for a term of six years.[9] She was a 'free Negro' who had been found guilty of bastardy. Judith finished her servitude with Humphrey in 1729, and then petitioned the Anne Arundel County Court in 1740 saying that Walter Phelps was holding her as a servant for debts already paid.[10]

In 1727 Humphrey bought from, and sold land to, Richard Snowden, within Anne Arundel County.[11] The following year, he sold everything to Richard Snowden. At this point, his health may have been failing; causing him to get his affairs in order. He was a mere thirty-eight years old. Humphrey died in the year 1730. An administration bond was filed in Anne Arundel County for his estate.[12]
