Biography

John Godwin was the second child born to Jonathan Godwin and Martha Marshall Godwin. His father, Jonathan Godwin, died in 1802.

"At a court of ordinary for Hancock county held on Monday, 4 January, 1808, John Godwin was appointed guardian for the persons and property of Barnaby Godwin, James Godwin, Salley Godwin, Nancy Godwin, Simeon Godwin, and Kinchin Godwin, orphans of Jonothan Godwin, deceased. (Note: Kinchin Godwin's full name was William Kinchin Godwin as proven in other records of Hancock county)." [1]

"Upon Jonathan's death His son John was appointed guardian over brothers Simon and William Kinchen." [2] [3]

"Page 255. Monies paid out of the Estate of JONATHAN GODWIN, dec'd, as follows: Amount brought from p.247, $282.37 1/2. 6 Apr 1807. JOHN GODWIN married Lydia Speights on June 20, 1809 in Hancock County, Georgia. [4]

JOHN GODWIN was listed as the head of household in the 1820 Federal Census in Hancock County, Georgia.

Free White: two males <10, two males 16<26, three males 26<45, one female <10, one female 26<45,
Three persons engaged in agriculture, four persons engaged in manufacture
Slaves: two males <14, one male 26<45, one female <14, three females 14<26.
This could be John Godwin and four of his brothers. It would appear he and his wife had two sons and a daughter since their marriage in 1809. It is interesting that three persons are engaged in agriculture and four in manufacture. There are five free white males from 16<45 and one male slave 26<45 for a total of six adult males. [5]
