Dan Moody Godwin was born February 3, 1927 ^[1] to John King Godwin and Leafa Nixon in Fort Worth, Texas. He was their youngest child. His oldest sibling was Florene Godwin, born March 6, 1914 in Texas. ^[2] She died October 1, 1925, following an operation for appendicitis. Leafa Godwin was not quite two years old. Cleo Sydney Godwin, John King Godwin, Jr., and Leafa or "Lee" Godwin were his other siblings.

In 1930, John King Godwin's family lived in Fort Worth Texas. ^[3]
