Biography

US Black Heritage Project
Margaret (Goe) Rice is a part of US Black heritage.

Margaret Goe was born about 1812 in Brownsville (or Redstone?), Pennsylvania.

She married Stephen Batch, then after his death, married Eugene A. Rice. She passed away in 1899, and was interred at Elizabeth, Allegheny, Pennsylvania.

Obituary. The Daily Republican Monongahela, Pennsylvania, Friday, March 24, 1899, page 1.[1]

DIED.
March 23, 1899, Mrs. Margaret Rice, mother of S. B. Batch, in her 75th Year. Interment Sunday at two o'clock, at Elizabeth.

Notes

  • Birth date taken from 1860 census record indicates she was born in 1812. But based on obituary, death in 1899 at age 75, gives her a birth year of 1824.
  • Birth place of Brownsville in daughter Sarah's death certificate, and Redstone in son James' death certificate.
  • The following notice in the newspaper indicates that E.A. Rice was the stepfather of Stephen Batch and brother of Mrs. Craft (a relation to Sarah A. (Craft) Batch?). This supports the marriage of Margaret and Eugene Rice after the death of Stephen Batch.[2]
