Biography

John Goff was born in 1794 in New Jersey. He married Lucy Johnson and lived in Franklin County, Indiana, where most of his children were born. They had 12 children Phebe Jane (who married Ambrose Yancey), Lucy Ann, Edward, William, James B., Sarah, Margaret, Wesley, John J., Prudence, Adaline, and Sarah Lydia.

This is questionable His parents were William Goff (1755-1815), born in Ireland, and Prudence (Susan) Passenger Goff (1758-1847).

According to the 1860 US Census (see attached document) in the household of John Goff and wife Lucy there is also a William Goff , Male 64 years of age born in New Jersey. We know that William Goff (1755 - 1815) was born in Ireland and he married Prudence Passenger (1758 - 1847). It is my theory that the William Goff in the 1860 US Census we are seeing who's age is reported as 64 years old is the son of David Goff the brother of William Goff (1755 - 1815).

So we are missing a generation here. And John Goff born 1794 in New Jersey is the grandson of William Goff (1755 - 1815).

And perhaps this William Goff "who went west" (a son of David Goff) in the 1860 US Census we are seeing who's age is reported as 64 years old is a relative or uncle of this John Goff (1794 - 1874).

According to: HISTORY OF FRANKLIN COUNTY, INDIANA BY AUGUST JACOB REIFDEL https://findingyellowbricks.com/2021/11/06/william-goff-cape-may-connections/

The Biographical, Genealogical and Descriptive History of the First Congressional District of New Jersey details the family of David Goff, naming five sons, one of whom was “William, who went west”. In 1793, David Goff, Sr. will was presented for probate, and it details land given to him by an old mill and his brothers William, John, and David.

It is as likely possible that William was the “William who went west” and/or William arrived from Ireland to join the Goffs in Cape May, as a relative from the old country.

However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
