Biography

Richard was born about 1655. He was the son of the notorious William Goffe (1605?–1679?) an English Roundhead politician and soldier, perhaps best known for his role in the execution of King Charles I and later flight to America. William Goffe and Frances Whalley.

Richard moved to Waterford, where he was the owner of the Glenville estate in Waterford, confiscated during the Protectorate [1]. He married in 1681 [2] Hannah Chamberlain, the daughter and heiress of Jonas Chamberlain of Poulmarle, Co Wexford [3]. They had four sons and three daughters.

Richard was a Friend (Quaker)

The birth date for Richard Goffe is estimated as 1655, based upon the following:
  • his mother Frances has the estimated date of birth of 1636, although there is no source for this date in the WikiTree profile;
  • his father William's date of birth is estimated as 1605 in his WikiTree profile - making him 30 years older than Frances;
  • the date of marriage of William and Frances is probably after 1654 (assuming Frances' date of birth of 1636 to be correct);
  • William fled for the American colonies in 1660, leaving behind seven children, the oldest of which therefore probably was born before 1650;
  • the period 1654 to 1660 seems tight, but not impossible, for seven children, and was at the time of William's zenith of power in the Protectorate.

It seems unlikely that this person died in France, could you please check? (Placé, Mayenne is often a bogus location - autocomplete). Thank you !
