Charles was born 27 March 1854 in the city of Monroe, Monroe Co., Michigan, the eighth of nine children of Patrick Golden, a native of Boyle, Co. Roscommon Ireland, and wife, Mary McDonough, also from Co. Roscommon.
After receiving earlier education at parochial and public schools in his hometown, Charles attended St. Vincent's College in Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania, graduating with the class of 1873 with a B.A. He then entered the University of Michigan, graduating with a Bachelor of Law in 1876.
On 27 Oct 1880, Judge Golden married Miss Frances L. Soleau, daughter of the late Touissant Soleau of the same city. They had four children:
After studying the law, he was admitted to the bar at Monroe, May 3, 1876. In that same year, he was elected to the circuit-court commissioner of Monroe Co., retaining the office for two years (1876-78). He served as city attorney for nearly twenty years (1877-1885). In 1881, he was the supervisor of the fourth ward.
In 1884, he was elected prosecuting attorney of Monroe County, retaining office till 1888. From 1885 to 1889, he was chief of the city fire department. He was later elected mayor of Monroe. He served as a member of the city's board of education, and was president of the board in 1889 and 1890.
Judge Golden passed away in 1914 and is buried in Monroe, Michigan.
