His boot shop/hairdresser in Ganmain was accidentally destroyed by fire on the 8th of April, 1930 along with the adjoining Ganmain Express newspaper office.

Following the fire the family moved to Leeton. His wife passed away in 1931 in Leeton, just over 12 months later.
