Adam Michael Goldstein was born in Philadelphia on March 30, 1973. He was the son of Herbert and Andrea Goldstein. According to Adam's mother, Herbert was not his biological father.

Adam began deejaying at the age of 21 in Los Angeles and took his stage name of DJ AM. He collaborated with Travis Barker from June 2008 under the name of TRV$DJAM. On September 19, they were involved in a plane crash, but both survived with critical injuries while the other four perished. In December, Adam filed a lawsuit against the plane's charter company. The lawsuit was settled posthumously in favor of his family.

On August 28, 2009, Adam was found dead in a New York City apartment. The coroner ruled that his death was due to a drug overdose. He was interred at a Jewish cemetery in Los Angeles on September 2.
