Richard was born in about 1830, the son of Richard Goldtone and Fanny Louisa Susan Burgon. He was baptised on 21 July 1831 at Walcot, Somerset.[1] Richard Bennett Goldstone's father was a surgeon.

The 1851 census lists him at St Helier, Jersey, cabinet maker, in the household of his aunt Mary A Burgon.[2]
