Biography

In the 1881 England Census Elizabeth Goldthorp 50 born abt 1831 in Armley, Yorkshire, England, charwoman, widow, was head of her household in 43 Oxford Road, Dukinfield, Cheshire, England. Other household members were her children:

Harry Goldthorp 18 Leeds clog iron maker
Elizabeth Goldthorp 16 Holbeck cotton reeler
Mary H. Goldthorp 14 Holbeck scholar
Tom Goldthorp 10 Sheffield half timer in rope walk
Jane Goldthorp 2 Dukinfield. [1]

Daughter of Alfred Barker Goldthorpe and Elizabeth Haywood, wife of Alfred Godfrey Crump Hemsworth and mother of Muriel, Russell Aubrey, Clarice Mildred, Dorothy, Lillian Ward, and Evelyn Jane Hemsworth.

Alfred and Jane met while working in a wire nail factory in Montreal. They were married June 6, 1899 at Victoria Presbyterian Church in Pointe-St.-Charles. They started out life living on Young Street with their four children, Muriel, Russell, Clarice and Dorothy. Living with them was Jane's mother, Elizabeth.

When the family moved to Vassar, Manitoba in 1908, they went by train, leaving most of their possessions behind being told that there would be no room for them. Upon arrival they discovered that not only was there plenty of room, but that these things were necessary.

While Alfred worked for the CNR, Jane ran a boarding house for the railroad crew. Sometimes she had as many as sixty men to feed.

In 1913, the family moved to Lampman, Saskatchewan, Canada. Again Alfred was working for the CNR. Jane was a lady-like, quiet woman whose main interest was her home and family. She was well-known for her baking, which she sold to the townspeople and she donated to all three churches in the area for their bake sales.

In 1927, the family moved again, this time to Willow Bunch, Saskatchewan. Over the years here, the children grew, married and went their separate ways.

Alfred and Jane retired to Vancouver, BC in 1941. Alfred worked for Malkin Foods and helped out in his son-in-law's store. It was here that they lived out their remaing years. Jane passed away in 1949 at the age of seventy.
