OBITUARY (1943, February 23). Narandera Argus and Riverina Advertiser (NSW : 1893 - 1953), p. 2. Mr. R. J. Gollan As previously reported in a recent issue of the "Argus," Mr. Roderick James Gollan, an early settler in the Ganmain and Matong-Grong Grong districts, passed away in the Narandera Hospital on 7th February, aged 81 years. Further particulars of this fine old resident, and a tribute by a friend, have since been supplied to us. Born at Kyneton, Victoria, in 1862, Mr. Gollan launched out in farming pursuits in the well-known Goulburn Valley district.of Victoria, and at Shepparton in 1886 he married Miss Sarah Lowry. Four years later the young couple moved to Ganmain, and after farming a property near that township for a couple of years Mr. Gollan selected a farm in the Matong-Grong Grong district, where he remained up to the time of his death. Mr. Gollan took an active interest in most of the Matong district's organisations, including the Progress Association, Football Club, Mechanics' Institute, etc., and was a devout worshipper of the Methodist Church. He was a good neighbour and a staunch friend, and won the respect and esteem of a large number of people. Mr. and Mrs. Gollan celebrated their golden wedding in 1936, when splendid tributes were paid to them by district residents and. by friends and relatives who had travelled many miles to attend. He is survived by his widow, two sons—Messrs. Moses Gollan (Griffith) and Alan Gollan (Matong)—and three daughters—Mrs. S, Ross (BatIow), Miss Ivy Gollan (Melbourne), and Miss Daisy Gollan (Matong). A daughter and a son predeceased him, the latter being the victim of an accident nearly three years ago. The funeral took place at Ganmain when interment was made in the Methodist portion of that cemetery. The bearers were Messrs. H. V. Hamblin, A. Mclnnes, G. Symes, and W. Evans. Mrs. Gollan's brother, Mr. James Lowry, of Shepparton, who was aged 75, died on the same day as Mr. Gollan (7th February) and was buried on the same day (9th February). [4] [5]
