Samuel and his parents, Solomon and Sarah (Root or Roth) Gumpertz emigrated from England to the the United States in 1863. [7] He became a naturalized citizen of the U.S. in New York on 4 October 1872. [8]

Samuel married Sophia Julian, daughter of David and Rosette (Ellison) Julian on 17 November 1867 in Manhattan, New York. He was 17 and she was 16 and a co-worker of Samuel's at the cigar factory where they worked. [9] Samuel and Sophia had several children in succession, the first child born within a year of their marriage; however, all of their names, birth and death dates are not known. Samuel, the eldest son, Henry, and Alexander, the youngest son, are listed in Samuel's probate record along with his two Mitchell granddaughters and his second wife, Gertrude Ainsley (Gleaves) Gompers.
According to the 1900 census records, Samuel was 50 years old, had been married for about 20 years and was residing with his aunt, uncle and cousins in Manhattan, New York. [17]
In the 1910 census, Samuel was 60 years of age and living in Washington, D.C, with his wife, Sophia 59 years of age, and daughter, Sadie, 26-years-old. Samuel and Sophia were both listed as having been born in England and Sadie in New York. His parents were listed as being born in Holland. [18]
In 1920, Samuel was in his own home in Washington, D.C. with his wife, Sophia, Son Alexander J. Gompers, 40 (b. New York), daughter-in law, Ella, 39 (b. England), three granddaughters: Esther R. (16 years, b. WDC); Sophia J. (14 years, b. WDC), May R. (11 years, b. NY), and friend Ernest O. Irish.
[19]
Samuel's wife, Sophie, died on 6 May 1920 in Washington, D.C. [20] Reportedly, he experienced a great deal of loneliness following her death and remarried a year later (about 1921) to Gertrude Ainsley (Gleaves). She is listed in his probate record.[21]
Death and Burial
Samuel Gompers did a great deal of national and international travel on behalf of the AFL. Indeed, he was in Mexico City in 1924 when his health took a serious turn. He wanted to die on U.S. soil. A special train was scheduled to return Samuel to the United States. He died on 13 December 1924 in San Antonio, Texas "on U.S. soil." [22]
His body was returned to New York and is buried in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. [23]
Samuel Gompers' will was registered in Probate on 20 December 1924 in the District of Columbia, Washington, D.C. [24]
In January 1950, the US Postal Service issued a 3-cent stamp in his honor. [25]
