Biography

Augustin Gonneville was born in Maskinonge, Quebec in 1785, the son of Antoine Lemire dit Gonneville and Marie-Anne Deziel dite Labrèche. Augustin was a voyageur and fur trader who spent his early years working for XY Company, the Northwest Company ( NWC) and the Hudson Bay Company. Southampton, Ontario, on Lake Huron was the Saugeen post, the southernmost post of the Hudson Bay Company and Augustin decided to settle down in this area. He had married Marguerite Longe in Red River country. Marguerite was the daughter of NWC trader Joseph Longe. Her mother was Isabelle Colin, a Cree woman. Marguerite was selected by her Saugeen Métis community to become the second carrier of the 1818 Ojibwe dish wampum, passed to her by the Piché family. Augustin bought property in Goderich and at this time worked for an independent group of fur traders. He became a founding member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Goderich, founded in 1834. Augustin and Marguerite’s children were George, Augustin Jr, Alexander, Scholastic Christina ( Payette ), Julia ( Springer ), Mary (Benoit), ( de Lamorandiere ), Joseph and Gabriel Gilbert. Augustin’s life ended when he went out on a voyageur job and never returned. Augustin’s ggrandfather Nicholas Marsolet was with Champlain at the founding of Quebec, according to the Quebec historian N.E. Dionne, in his book “ The Makers of Canada: Champlain”, Chapter 3. Augustin was the last in a long line of French fur traders in his family.
