Biography
Gianfrancesco was born in 1395, the eldest son of Franceso I Gonzaga, Capitano Generale di Mantova (Mantua) and hsi second wife, Margherita Malatesta.
He succeeded on the as Capitano Generale di Mantova 1407, when his father died, under a regency. He was created 1st Marchese di Mantova by Imperial decree on 6 May 1432 (confirmed in 1438 and 1442).[1]
