Biography

Elizabeth Goodale was likely born at Downham or Yarmouth, Norfolk, England, the daughter of John and the widow Elizabeth (nee Parlett/Taylor) Goodale. (p. 273)[1](p. 18)[2] She was baptized on June 5, 1614, at Yarmouth. (p. 21)[2] (p. 35)[3]

She was bequested L100 when she attain the age of 21 or at her marriage, in the will of her father John, written June 25, 1625 and proved Sept. 24, 1625. (p. 18-9)[2]

Elizabeth and her widowed mother came to New England after 1637, but by about 1640, when they were of Newbury. [2]

Widow Elizabeth Lowle, her brother-in-law and sister, Abraham and Susan Toppan, petitioned the courts in 1647, for administration of their mother's estate. This was granted May 27, 1652. [Mass. Bay Colony Records V. 4: p. 92] (p. 65)[4]

Elizabeth married at Newbury, MA as his second wife, John Lowle. [1] [2] John was the son of Percival and Rebecca Lowell, was baptized on Oct. 11, 1604, at Portbury, Somerset, England. (p. 310) [5] (p. 215-222)[6]

Her husband died at Newbury on July 10, 1647. [7]

John's Lowle's will was written June 29, 1647; proved Oct. 27, 1647. In it he left bequests to:

  • his wife Elizabeth
  • daughter Mary Lowle
  • sons Peter, James and Joseph Lowle
  • his children by his second wife Elizabeth, Benjamin and Elizabeth Lowle
  • Executors: William Gerrish, Richard Lowle, John Sanders, Richard Knight and Nicholas Noice. (V. 1: p. 67-8)[8](p. 72)[9]

Elizabeth died at Newbury on Apr. 23, 1651. [7]

Her will was made on March 1, 1650, proved Sept. 30, 1751. She left bequests to:

  • my sister Tappine
  • three sons-in law (sic) Jno. Lowle, James and Joseph
  • son Benjamin
  • daughter Elizabeth
Her instructions included that her brother Thomas Millerd, keep her son Benjamin and his estate until he 'goes forth to be an apprentice'.
Overseers to be Thomas Millerd, Richard Lowle, Abraham Tappine, and William Gerrish.
If my son or daughter die before coming of age, then their portion(s) be divided between my husbands children: Jno. Lowle & James and Ben (sic), & Mary and Peter Lowle. (V. 1: p. 139) [8] (p. 378-380)[10]

  3. Elizabeth born Feb. 16, 1645; died at Rowley, MA on Dec. 14, 1731; married Capt. Philip Nelson of Rowley in Dec. or Jan, 1666/7. [7] [11][6] (p. 134)[12]
