Biography

Arabella Goode Cunningham (daughter of James Hill Good and Sarah Swain) was born in Ireland about 1740. She married James Cunningham around 1760-62 and their first four children were born in Ulster, North Ireland. The family emigrated to Colonial America through Philadelphia in 1769 and their last two children were born in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.

"About the year 1786 a number of families emigrated from Shenandoah Valley, Virginia, to a section of the French Broad River afterwards known as Taylor's Bend and Pine Chapel neighborhoods. Taylor's Bend is a few miles above Dandridge, and Pine Chapel was erected on the south side of the river some seven or eight miles east of Dandridge. (see map) Among them were the families of Mrs. Arabella Cunnyngham. Mrs. Cunnyngham was the widow of James Cunnyngham, who emigrated from Ulster, landed in Philadelphia in 1769, and located in Virginia.

"James died in Virginia just before his family moved to what is now Jefferson County. James was a devoted member of the Protestant Episcopal Church, both in Ireland and America. Arabella was a different spirit from himself, and kept her spinning wheel whirring while her pious husband was engaged in family devotions. She was in hearty sympathy with her neighbors, whose moral training allowed them to take the Sacrament on Sunday, and fiddle, dance and indulge in all forms of worldly pleasure during the week." —From Holston Methodism, by R.N. Price, [1908].

In 1784 their first daughter, Arabella Cunningham, married John Winton. This was a year or so before James Cunningham died (1785-86) in Shenandoah County, Virginia. John Winton and Arabella had two children between 1785 and 1787 in Virginia, and between 1789 and 1807 they had eleven more children in Tennessee, with the last eight children born in Roane County, Tennessee.

"Mrs. Cunnyngham found a home in the wilderness of East Tennessee, and about the year 1790 she found peace in believing, in a revival conducted by John McGee. James Cunnyngham and wife, Arabella, had six children." —(from Holston Methodism); Arabella Goode Cunningham died August 26, 1798 in Jefferson County, Tenn.

This profile has her married second to John Winston (note the "s"). But it was her daughter Arabella who married John Winston (no "s"). Conflation?

Goode-251 and Goode-1209 appear to represent the same person because: Arabella Goode-251 (1740-1798) into Arabelle Goode-1209 (1745-1798)

appear to be the same person. Please merge.

Thank you!

Goode-1354 and Goode-1366 do not represent the same person because: One of these women was born, married and having children in Gloucestershire, England the other was apparently having children in Ireland. They were married to 2 completely different men. They are not the same person and there is no evidence, not even a first name similarity that they are. The only thing they have in common is their surname.
Goode-1354 and Goode-1366 appear to represent the same person because: Writing to propose a merge of Goode-1354 and Goode-1366. They appear to be the same person.

Thank you!
