Wife of a PGM-era immigrant; she died prior to his emigration. Disputes about her origins led to this profile being protected, tracked and co-managed by the Puritan Great Migration Project.

Biography

This profile represents the wife of William Buck of Cambridge. Her given name and surname are unknown.

It is estimated that she was born about 1597 according to her marriage to William Buck and the birth of the son, Roger Buck in 1617.

William and Roger migrated to New England in 1635, implying that she died prior to their immigration from England.

They settled in Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts, where William lived out his life, not fully integrated into the communal life of Cambridge. There is no evidence that he married again during this twenty years and more in New England. Roger, their son, married by 1642 to a woman with the given name of Susan.

Disputed Origins

A previous version of this profile claimed, without source, that her maiden name was Good or Goode, but that name is not substantiated or acknowledged in Anderson's "Great Migration."

Please do not add any additional husbands or children to this profile. Thank you.

Unless there is another inline citation, all biographical information is from:

  • Anderson, Robert Charles. "The Great Migration, Immigrants to New England 1634-1635", Volume 1. Boston: New England Historic Genealogical Society, 1999. Page: 448. Featured article on William Buck. subscription site. Quote "Marriage by about 1617 _______ _______ She apparently died by 1635." She did not migrate with her husband and son, thus the assumption that she died in England by 1635.

Since Margaret died before her son and husband came to New England, should she be PGM Adjacent instead of PGM?

Done. I also cleaned up her profile a bit.

Thanks M & Jillaine. M. just a small helpful... it's adjunct, not adjacent...  :-)
Hello, since this profile of Margaret (Goode-313) Buck is a Puritan Great Migration profile on WikiTree, it is important that it be as accurate as possible and that the biography be written in accordance with Anderson's Great Migration Series.

Anderson says that William Buck-155's wife's name is unknown and that she apparently died by 1635 since William was a widower when he migrated with only his son Roger Buck. Great Migration 1634-1635, A-B. (Online database. AmericanAncestors.org. New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2008.) Is there an objection to changing the name of this profile to Unknown, Unknown Buck? And bringing the biography in line with Anderson?

Hello,

I am trying to detangle the family of William Buck-155.

As you know, the Puritan Great Migration Project follows Anderson's Great Migration Series unless there is more recent bonafide research. See here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Puritan_Great_Migration_Sources

About this particular William Buck, Anderson's Great Migration says "Marriage: By about 1617 _______ _______. She apparently died by 1635." Then it says, "He apparently was a widower when he arrived, and does not seem to have married during his twenty years and more in New England."

I search American Ancestors (the site where the "Great Migration Series" can be viewed) for Margaret Good/Goode and I could find no one listed by that name Has anyone found any bonafide research that is more current than Anderson?

Goode-416 and Goode-313 appear to represent the same person because: Hello, these appear to possibly be the same person (similar vital stats) although death details are different. If PMs agree this is the same person, could they approve the merge proposal and note the differences in the death particulars in the biography as avenues for future research. Thanks a lot!
Good-944 and Good-306 appear to represent the same person because: Hello, these appear to be the same person (similiar vital stats), critical difference is the first name of her spouse which is different.
