Biography

Birth

Patience Gooden was probably born sometime about 1740, based on the birth date of her first known child. Her name at birth may have been Goodwin, and she may have born in or near Berwick, Maine, although there is no proof of either. See the Research Note below.

Marriage

Patience Gooden married Andrew Grant, by the birth of their first known child, on 20 Jan 1759.[1]

Death and Burial

Patience (Gooden) Grant died at Woolwich, Maine, shortly before 14 Sep 1766, when according to the church records there, "Was buried ye wife and babe of Andrew Grant."[2]

Research Note

Regarding her name, Gooden is very uncommon. Patience's husband, Andrew Grant, was from Berwick. The Goodwin family is numerous at Berwick, and their name frequently appears in the records as Goodin, so it is likely that she was a Goodwin. It is worth noting that the DAR record of her husband calls her Patience Goodwin.[3]

The Berwick records show a Patience Goodwin baptized there in 22 Apr 1725, the daughter of William Goodwin, but she is listed second of the five children from that family baptized on that date.[4] That would imply a birth date of no later than about 1720. Since Patience Grant had a child born in 1766, it is possible, but only barely, that she could have been this woman—and she would have been somewhat older than her husband if this is the case.

Another Patience Goodwin was baptized at Berwick on 22 Sep 1740, the daughter of Elias Grant.[5] She would have been the right age to marry Andrew Grant; but she also may have been the Patience Goodwin who married Andrew Cooper at Berwick on 31 Dec 1767.[6]
