Research Notes
Betty Goodgame compiled a family genealogy in the mid 1980's, which is available on FamilySearch, however this does not appear to be well sourced and INACCURATELY states his wife was the sister of David Crockett - Bible records of the family disprove this claim. [3][4]
The portion of this genealogy pertaining to this individual was uploaded here for reference. [5]

Ancestry.com has a detailed family tree of the Goodwin/Goodgame lineage (unverified) - subscription required. Seems a likely case - Father John Godwin 1735-1783 husband of Elizabeth Doswell - with links way back to English aristoracy (if you can believe it?).

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

What is the justification for conflating Goodwin and Goodgame? Trees including the Goodwin-Doswell family show numerous children who apparently managed to carry on the Goodwin surname unchanged.
On the other hand there is an ancestry.com document available with the title:
"Connecticut, U.S., Hale Collection of Cemetery Inscriptions and Newspaper Notices, 1629-1934 for Elizabeth Chapman; Connecticut Newspaper Notices Vol 53," which notes:
"February 7, 1793; Chapman, Elizabeth; New London, Wife of Capt. John, 60"
It seems reasonable to provisionally conclude that Captain John Goodgame and Elizabeth Chapman Goodgame were the parents of our John Chapman Goodgame, Sr. The seems stronger than presuming than equating John Goodgame and John Goodwin.
Is there anyone who can confirm the middle name? It is proffered at "Find A Grave" but I have yet to find supporting evidence.
Thanks you.
