FindaGrave Bio:

Joseph Hardin Goodin was born in Tennessee, probably Knox County, in 1793 to Alexander Virtchworth Goodin and Jane Ann Hardin. At an early age, he went to Pike County, Illinois as a surveyor and then migrated to Saline County, Missouri, where he married Virginia Rose (Jane) Allen in 1820. He became Sheriff of the county, and moved back and forth between there and Pike County, Illinois until about 1842 when he and his family moved to Greene County, Missouri.

He was a staunch Republican and supporter of the Union Cause, being one of 42 Republicans in the county who voted for Abraham Lincoln in the 1860 census. He enlisted in the army--Goodin was apparently a private in the 2nd Missouri Infantry Battalion, under the command of Maj. Peter J. Osterhaus, 1st Brigade, Maj. Samuel D. Sturgis, Army of the west, Brig. Gen. Nathaniel Lyon. Lyon was killed during the battle of Wilson's Creek. Aug 10, 1861.

He and Jane had at least eleven children. He died of old age 7 April 1878 in Cave Spring, Cass Twp., north of Willard, and was buried here, along with numerous descendants.
