Biography

Elvin was born in 1922 near Knifley in Adair County, the first born child of Tom and Ollie. His father bought and sold several farms but for a good portion of his youth, he grew up on a farm along Robinson Ridge close to Knifley. He went to school through the 8th grade in the typical rural 1-room schoolhouse. He moved with his family to Marseilles, Illinois in 1942 to work on WWII landing craft that were being manufactured there. He was drafted into the Army in 1942 while in Illinois.

Elvin served in the 64th Chemical Depot Company. His basic training was at the newly constructed Camp Sibert in northeastern Alabama. On top of standard combat training, he was trained to work with chemical weapons should the Allies need to respond to German use of chemical weapons similar to World War I. Elvin traveled to Camp Shanks, New York to embark on the Queen Elizabeth bound for Glasgow, Scotland. He was stationed in Westbury Wilts, England until a couple of months after D-Day when the unit shipped out to Utah Beach in Normandy. From September 1944 to May 1945, the company followed the front lines through France, Belgium and Germany including the Battle of the Bulge. After 6 months as part of the army of occupation, Elvin boarded the George Washington in Le Harve, France bound for the Brooklyn Navy Yard. After a long train trip to Illinois, he was discharged in December 1945.

His family had returned to Adair County, Kentucky after the war ramped down and Elvin followed after his discharge. He moved on to Louisville, Kentucky shortly after (~1946) & began working in various manufacturing jobs.

He married the widow Nadine Wood in 1959 and settled into their home in Shively for the next 27 years. His son was born the following year in 1960.

He passed away suddenly in his sleep in August 1986 in North Fort Myers, Florida only 3 weeks after moving there with Nadine for retirement. He was buried in the Fairmont Cemetery in Henderson, Kentucky.
