Biography

This profile is a known fraud or fabrication

This profile has been proven to be a fabrication. Previously, it had several sources (listed below) that may or may not be genuine. The sources that may prove genuine are not associated with this profile. Because this profile has been proven to be a fabrication based on the sourcing and biographical elements presented at creation, it shall not be taken out of the Disproven Existence Adjunct Project without substantive evidence that it truly existed. If you wish to restore this profile from the disproven existence categorization, please open a G2G thread, add the tag "fraud" to the post, present your sources and argument, and then link to the thread in the profile notes.

Research Notes

This profile may contain elements from a real person, but since most of the data and especially the biography are so far off from the real record, it can't be considered to represent the same person.

The will with mention of 196 black slaves in 17th C Bedfordshire, is not reflective of English History, nor is the will in the format, normal for wills of this period .

The parish church in Souldrop is and was All Saints. Google doesn't find a saint called St Gibbing. Souldrop, only amounts to 1075 acres, there is no Goodman mentioned as owning the Manor. http://www.british-history.ac.uk/vch/beds/vol3/pp94-95#h3-0003.

Kibworth where his father lived is also small 1,312 acres and again land ownership is well documented http://www.british-history.ac.uk/vch/leics/vol5/pp167-187 and indeed, a recent book https://www.penguin.co.uk/books/178582/the-story-of-england/ focuses on the history of this village from earliest times. There is no mention of this man or his family.

Previous profile text

The text appearing below appeared at the creation of this profile. It has been retained solely as a reference in order to identify possible duplicate profiles on the internet. It should not be assumed that it lends any credibility to the existence of the person in this profile:

6th Great Grandfather John was born in 1679. John Goodman ... He passed away in 1737. John was recorded as a land owner in Souldrop Bedford England. He raised cattle and sheep. He was also a ground soldier delivering arms to the troups. He is buried at Souldrop, Bedfordshire, England. Grave marker exists.
Note: There may be more children but the first found on the England Birth records was Mary in 1709."
John Goodman and wife Ann Groocock were my 6th Great Goodman Grandparents.
Archivist Roger Groocock of Leicester transcribed the will of John Goodman from the Archives of Kibworth Library: (it has been written as it would be today - a lot of liberty was taken to change the mans words)
I John Goodman do hereby write my last will and testament on this day Jan. 3, 1737. My body is failing due to damage caused while a Soldier. My mind is firm.
I appoint my son Joseph Goodman as my Executor.
My second appointee is to be my daughter Mary Goodman (birth name),
My third appointee is to be my son Jeffery Goodman.
As owner of 1742 acres of workable land, a home and outbuildings plus 196 slaves I shall divide up my property,
To my second wife of 2 years who bore me no children I leave the carriage house owned by me in the town of Souldrop Bedford England being named "The Petal Cottage." She may remain in said cottage until she dies. Money will be supplied to her by Joseph to maintain her standard of living.
My property is to be sold, house sold, slaves and all maintenance tools to be auctioned off as soon after my death as possible.
I do hereby leave my gold pieces to Joseph as well as my formal carriage and horses.
Joseph will be responsible to dividing up the household furnishings and the money to his siblings. I insist the money goes into trust for one year. At that time those who are patient about receiving their funds will receive same, those who are not will receive nothing.
To any black who can prove I am his legal Father I leave 10 pounds.
I do not wish a large funeral - I am to be placed beside my dear ones who left me too early at the Saint Gibbings Graveyard in my personal plot.
My attorney is the younger William Oldham who will probate my will.
I am Esquire John Goodman x

Judy,

Please check the information on the category main page and read the notes on the top of the biography of this profile. This will give you all the information you are looking for. There are also several G2G threads on the subject. Thanks.

Isabelle,

I adopted this profile and have not had time to research it. I have to assume you have. I would like to know the name of the individual or team who decided this profile was fabricated. Do you have that information?
