DEATH OF MR GEORGE GOODMAN
AN OLD ADAMINABY RESIDENT.
A well-known resident of the Adaminaby district, Mr. George Goodman, farmer and grazier died at his home, Benefield, on the Eucumbene river, on. Wednesday last, after six months illness, at the advanced age of 74 years. Mr Goodman proceeded to Sydney in February last for medical attention, but was informed that his case was beyond medical skill, and he returned to his home three weeks prior to his decease. The remains were interred in the Methodist section of the Adaminaby cemetery on Friday, the grave being beside that of the late Mrs Goodman whose death occurred five years since. There was a large attendance at the graveside, the service being conducted by the Rev. J. P. Morti more; four members of the Masonic body to which he belonged, acting as pall bearers.
The deceased was born at Benefield, England, in 1850, and was married at Yorkshire to Miss Mary Dowley. He came to Australia in 1874, and with his wife settled in the Adaminaby district, having occupied the Benefield holding for the past 15 years. In the early 80's he was a road contractor, and made numerous Manaro roads. In 1889 he constructed the road down the Talbingo mountain in the Tumut district, and later a road to the Yarrango-billy Caves, the latter on the occasion of the visit of Earl Jersey then Governor of New South Wales. Subsequently the Public Works Department engaged his services as road surveyor in various portions of the State, and as over-seer of road works under the day labour system, the road down the Macquarie Pass, between Robertson and Shellharbour being one under his supervision. This is now one of the principal tourist routes of the South Coast.
A grown-up family of one daughter and five sons survives him, these being Mrs. A Eccleston of Adaminaby, Messrs Arthur of Mt. Hope; Herbert of Sydney; and Robert; Albert and Walter of Adaminaby. He also leaves nine grandchildren. The late Mr Good-man was a member of the Masonic and Oddfellows lodges. Mr. J. F. Allen carried out the funeral arrangements.[1]
