Dr. Eli Goodman, 70, first Jewish president of the Indiana State Medical Association, died at his home Nov. 30. He had practiced medicine in Charlestown, which is about 12 miles north of Louisville, for about 37 years. Only a few days later, a sister, Mrs. Yetta Meyers, Providence, R.I., died, third member of the family to die within a short period. A brother, Leo Goodman, who died in Washington, D.C. in September, was a retired labor organizer and lobbyist. Dr. Goodman was chairman of the board of North Clark Community Hospital in Charlestown, an institution for which he sensed a need during his practice of medicine because the nearest hospital was in Jeffersonville, 10 miles away. Some 30 years ago, as a means of responding to antiSemitic slurs, he founded a weekly newspaper, The Leader, which is still published in Charlestown. His wife, Margaret, served as publisher of the newspaper until her death about two years ago. The Leader shop also turned out B’nai B’rith Briefs for Louisville Lodge of B’nai B’rith, of which Dr. Goodman was a member. He was president of the Indiana association in 1977-78 and had served as president of the Clark County Medical Association. Dr. Goodman was engaged in a wide range of civic projects. He was on the medical staff of Jewish Hospital in Louisville and had been a donor to Louisville’s United Jewish Campaign. A native of Boston, he attended University of Louisville and received his medical degree from Tufts University. He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Ida Goldstein, Boston, and two brothers, Bob Goodman, Louisville, and Dr. James Goodman, Coral Gables, FI.
