Biography

Daniel Goodwin, born 1656 [1] He was the son of Daniel Goodwin and Margaret Spencer.

He married 17 Oct 1682 (Libby, Noyes and Davis says 17 Dec) Amy Thompson, daughter of Miles Thompson who was received into the church on 9 May 1679. They resided in South Berwick, Maine.

On 24 May 1679 his father deeded him land and a small house then occupied by Daniel Stone. He was on the grand jury in 1687 and Surveyor of highways in 1694-5 and a selectman from 1695 until 1698. In July 1694 Daniel was presented at the county court for "being overtaken with drink". His wife was received into the church on 9 May 1714.[2]

I Nicholas Turbet and Elizabeth his wife of the town of Kittery… in consideration of a Valluable sum partly in hand paid and ye rest secured to be paid by Daniel Goodin Junr… doe… sell… fifteen Acres of upland lying in… Kittery… being a part of a hundred Acres of land formerly granted by ye town of Kittery unto Thomas Spence near Wilcocks pond and also one fifth part of ye halfe of that Marsh or Meadow land called ye further Marsh lately belonging to ye aforesd Thomas Spencer Deceased and to his wife Patience after his Decease and Since ye Decease of ye sd Patience Spencer falleth to ye sd Turbet and his sd wife as part of their Portion… this fourth day of January one thousand six hundred Ninety three, Ninety four…

Daniel signed a deposition aged 64 on 23 May 1720:

The Testimony of Daniel Goodin aged sixty four Years & upwards saith that upwards of fifty Years agone he this Deponent remembers Mr. Roger Plaisted his living at the Great Work in Berwick & improved a considerable Parcel of Land by Fencing Planting & sowing & also a Saw Mill standing on the Falls called Great Works Falls & also that the sd Plaisted mowed several pieces of Meadow vizt at Humphreys Pond & Whites Marsh all which Premisses was possessed & improved by sd Plaisted… & I have been informed & always understood in the Right of Mr. Eliakim Hutchinson of Boston who rented the same of sd Hutchinson & that the Bounds of the Land at the Great Works… which have been reputed & accounted to belong to sd Hutchinson was bounded… by the land of Thomas Spencers… to Faggotty Bridge & so down the Brook to ye Great Works River… by Humphry Chadbourne… & after the sd Mr Plaisted left the Premisses, Thomas Dowty had the Possession of the sames as I have also been informed by several Persons under sd Hutchinson to this Day… Kittery May 23d 1720. This Indenture of Lease made the twenty seven Day of February… 1722/3… between Daniel Goodin of… Berwick… & Amie his Wife… & Thomas Goodin their Son… in Consideration of the Rents Covenants & Services hereafter expressed… by the said Thomas Goodin pformed… doth… set over.. all that my Homestead Lot of Land where I now dwell with the Orchard & Barn… & half Part of my Dwelling House & also my Marsh & Land at Sluts Corner… Also all my Quick Stock both neat Cattle Sheep & Swine with all my Husbandry Utensils… we do reserve for our own Use the Wood & Timber growing in our Pasture… the sd Thomas Goodwin doth… pay… p Annum Yearly to his foresd Father & Mother… as long as they or either of them shall live the one half Part of all the Emoluments Profits & Incoms of all &singular both read & psonal… Premisses. That is to say the one half part of all the Increase of the quick Stock both of neat Cattle Sheep & Swine & other Creatures… half the Wool of the Sheep & half of the Milk of the Cows other ways half of the Butter & Cheese that shall be made of the Milk… & half of all Sorts of Grain both Indian Corn & English Grain… & half of all Sorts of Garden Fruit & Tobacco & half the Cydar that shall be made of the Fruit of the Orchard… & to have Priviledge of the Oxen to hale their Firewood or other Necessaries… & half of the Benefit of the Oxens Labour…

Item I Give & bequeath to my Daughter Ann More five Shillings to be paid in Bills of Credit having Given her a Cow one of the three Reserved to be Disposed of in my Deed of Gift aforsd

Item I Give and Bequeath to my well Beloved wife all the rest of my Personall Estate not already Disposed of by my Deed of Gift Aforsaid...

Item I Give my homestead to my son Thomas Goodin with the live Stock & ct As is more Particularly Exprest in ye fore mentd Deed of Gift to him & his heirs forever he paying or Allowing my Said Wife half the Income of Said homestead.

Lastly I Constitute my Son Thomas Goodin my Sole Executor of this my Last will & Testament.
