Biography

Daniel Goodwin, immigrant ancestor, believed to be a brother of Richard Goodwin, of Gloucester, and son of Bridget Goodwin who m. 2d. Henry Travers of Ipswich, and m3d. Richard Window of Gloucester. She died in Gloucester, where her inventory was dated August 9, 1673. Daniel Goodwin may have been from Torrington, near Plymouth, England. [1]

He and a brother came to America in 1650 and arrived in Virginia, aboard a boat owned by a relative. Daniel then took what was called a coaster (a ship that plyed the coastline) and arrived in Maine.

He married first Margaret Spencer in Mar 1653, and second to Sarah Saunders (aka Sanders) after 1670. [2]

Daniel Goodwin was a pioneer and tavern proprietor holding land in the parish of Quamphegan, a part of early Kittery that became Berwick and then South Berwick, Maine. As a large landed proprietor, he kept a public house with and without a license and at times was in court because of "disturbances" which occured at his establishment.

He was in Kittery in 1652 when he signed the submission to Massachusetts and also was granted land in the town of Kittery, Maine. He received his lot by a town grant in 1654 and was a Constable of Kittery on 10 Dec. 1662, a Sergeant in 1659 and a Grand juryman in 1659 and 1678.

On 14 July 1683 he gave his sons Thomas and James a tract of land in Berwick where he was living and on 19 March 1696/7 he deeded land to his sons William and Moses and on 21 Aug. 1701 to his son Daniel.

On 13 Apr. 1697 he was a Selectman and signed a Berwick petition 4 Sept. 1697, a petition to the general court of Boston 10 Dec. 1662 for aid in discharging the duties of his office in the face of local opposition to that government, and a petition to Oliver Cromwell in 1657. He was also one of the founders of the church in South Berwick in 1702. In Dec. 1711 he deeded the homestead to his son Thomas for support.

Daniel Goodwin died before March 16, 1713 and is buried in Old Fields Cemetery in South Berwick, York, Maine. [3]

His descendants are eligible for membership in the Piscataqua Pioneers (whose ancestors must have settled on either bank of the river in colonial days), in Flagon and Trencher, Descendants of Colonial Tavern keepers, and in the Goodwin Family Organization.

Birth and Parentage. What sources confirm that the Daniel Goodwin of Kittery is the same man born to Daniel and Dorothy Baker at East Bergholt, Suffolk, England. For some references to the latter, see Some Goodwin Notes 2022.

Immigration. Profile reports he immigrated to Virginia. What are the host of sources that support this claim.

Children. Profile is in need of a child list with sources to support the children linked on WikiTree.

Research Notes

  • There is a Daniel Goodwin was born in April 1617 in East Bergholt, Suffolk County, England.
  • Regarding additional children who do not appear in published works: David and the two Adam. They do appear in some online family trees and may have stemmed form here. More research is needed to determine if they do belong in this family group. [4]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Daniel by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Daniel:

Here is a link to the article on Daniel's ancestry by Evelyn Stager: https://www.thenegoodwinproject.com/goodwin_news/vol3_issue_3.htm

The TAG article asserts that Daniel of Kittery is the son of Daniel and Dorothy (Barker) Goodwin (in the chart on page 6) and says that Daniel (Sr.) was the son of John and Elizabeth (Woodgate) Goodwin in the text on page 8. The only backing (that I could find), is a footnote pointing readers to an article by Evelyn Stager in The Goodwin News 3(3), 17–18 and a 1985 typescript by John Hayes Goodwin held by the Maine Historical Society.

It is worth noting that Fiske walked back his endorsement of this connection in the second part of his article (page 104, footnote 59), pointing out that evidence linking the New England man with the East Bergholt Goodwins is lacking (as is onomastic evidence).

I adopted the profiles for his attached parents and did some work on their profiles, incorporating their mentions in a couple of NEHGR articles and making note of what is not sourced. I think there's enough to remove their uncertain markers, so I went ahead and did that, but would appreciate input if anyone thinks that might be premature.

I think the parents should be marked uncertain because they seem to be based only on similarity of name. Also, Plymouth, Gloucester and Suffolk are all a long way away from each other. This was especially true in the 17th Century. Having evidence for such different locations underscores the fact that we really don't know who the parents were.

The NEHGS identification is quite a bit more than similarity of name. Page 8 of the linked 2005 TAG article states conclusively, with sources, that John Goodwin and Elizabeth Woodgate were the grandparents of Daniel Goodwin of Kittery, Maine. NEHGS is a preferred source for profiles in this time and location. If you believe their sources are inadequate to support the connection made, we will need a bit more analysis.

And we don't have evidence for those different locations. Yes, Plymouth, Gloucester and Suffolk are a long way from each other, but the first two paragraphs of Daniel's biography here (where the references to Gloucester and Plymouth appear) are unsourced and highly speculative. There is no evidence that I can see here for those connections other than the name "Goodwin" and decades of unconfirmed speculation. The NEHGS pedigree rejects the speculative Bridget Goodwin connection in favor of a Suffolk origin. The attached parents are far more credible than the tenuous mother and family connection currently in his biography.

If the sources are there to back it up then that's great. In that case, the problem is with the way the Wikitree biography is written. The first paragraph gives the impression that there is a likelihood that he is from Gloucester or Plymouth. I think it would be better to start by explaining what the evidence is that he was actually from Suffolk.

Agreed. His bio here definitely needs to be rewritten to incorporate the more recent research. The profile managers here are all active members, so I like to give them first swing at anything this significant, if they want to do it.

Given it's been about 6 months since said research was first referenced here in the comments, I'd say we're safe to go ahead and do it ourselves. I'm out of town right now, but might have some time next week to sit down and work on it.

Should this profile be removed from PGM? He does not appear in any of the Great Migration series (including GM Directory). The first (only?) record of him appears to be a possible marriage to a Sarah Saunders after 1673 (this is Anderson's only reference to him, as found in GM2 6:169 stating that the source the information came from did not provide evidence of the supposed marriage). The bio indicates he sailed to America in 1650, a decade after the PGM Project's scope. Old Kittery and Her Families by Stackpole indicates that Daniel Goodwin received his lot in 1654 (p. 124, https://archive.org/details/oldkitteryherfam00staciala/page/124/mode/2up). Stackpole also said that Daniel signed the Submission of 1652 and, without evidence, also said he was "probably the son of Daniel and Dorothy (Barker) Goodwin of Oxford, England" (p. 453, https://archive.org/details/oldkitteryherfam00staciala/page/452/mode/2up).

Yes, I think you are right. I will remove the project account and project box.

Including naming parents as Daniel^A Goodwin and Dorothy Barker, Daniel^1 Goodwin of Kittery ME appears in "Ancestry of Anna (Wall) (Jacob) Moody," in William Wyman Fiske, "The Wall Family of Essex," The American Genealogist, 80 (2005):1-10, 102-116, 201-216 at 6; digital images by subscription, AmericanAncestors.

Chart calls him Daniel^1 Goodwin (Daniel^A, John^B).

Hope this helps. --Gene

A little confused. Are you asking me to do something?

Hi Roland,

I was just providing information about him found in a modern, published source. --Gene

It doesn't sound like we're very confident about his parents, and their profiles are quite bare, although they attach him to a robust tree Objections to marking them uncertain until we can find something more solid for where he came from?

I added the Needs Research maintenance category. The first paragraph in bio doesn't really align with the attached parents.

Nothing indicates that David or either Adam Goodwin were part of this family group and they aren't sourced? I move to disconnect them.
