Biography

Mark lived in Lyman and, according to the Goodwin Genealogy, in Portsmouth, NH. He’s listed in the 1790, 1800, 1810 and 1820 census reports for Coxhall/Lyman. He is also listed in the 1798 tax list for Coxhall and owned a house on a 2 acre lot worth $100 and a 50 acre lot worth $175. [1]

"Stephen Wingate of Buxton… physician… is a creditor of the estate of Mark Goodwin of Lyman… that the widow of said Mark died more than a year since; that the next of kin has neglected to take out letters of administration upon said estate wherefore he prays that letters of administration… may be granted…

Benjamin Dudley of Lyman… that Mark Goodwin of said Lyman… died intestate having real estate situated in said Lyman, that there has not been any administration in said Goodwins estate and his wife is also deceased and that your petitioner is a creditor to said estate and therefore prays that administration may be granted to him…

It looks like Mark’s children didn’t get anything from his meagre estate.

It’s interesting to note that this account was done in 1827, but, the amounts were given in both dollars as well as shillings and pence… 25 years after the United States started minting its own money. It appears that a dollar was worth six shillings.
