Retrieved from http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article117536228 Obituary GEORGE Sydney Goodwin, the "grand old man of Monaro" died at the Cooma District Hospital Iast Monday morning, May 30, from Influenza, after a short illness. He was 88 years of age, and had lived his entire life at Middle Flat, some three miles South East of Cooma, at Bonnie Doon,where he was born.. He was a member ol the grazing firm of Goodwin Bros,, which has carried on uniting pursuits at Middle Flat for the past century, Mr, Goodwin was the oldest Shire Councillor on Monaro, and when he did not seek re-election at the Council Elections in November, 1950, he had been serving on the Council continuously for 43 years. He was on the Board of Directors at the Cooma, District Hospital for over 30 years, as president for four years, and was made an honorary life member when he retired. He was also a member of the Cooma Pastoral and Agricultural Association, and was on the Committee for many years. He was a committeeman of the Cooma Race club, and; during the first and second world wars, he was a member of the local Repatriation Committee.In February, 1950, he was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation from the Shires Association with the then President, J, M. Caldwell, performing the function. Mrs. Goodwin, who also lived to a grand old age, predeceased him some six months ago. He leaves one son, Rex, two daughters, Edna (Mrs, R. O. Eccleston,Bonnie Doon) and Doris (Mrs, L. G. Carpenter, of Big Badga), eleven .grandchildren, two great-grandchildren,Monaro Shire President (Mr. Tom Darmondy) led the pall bearers at the funeral from Cooma Church. of England wlth Councillors A. B. Agnew, P. F. Mooney and E. A. Adams, Herb Lawler, who retired from the Council In 1950, and Steve Hugget, Shlre worker for the past 25 years. Representatives from Cooma Municipal Council, Monaro County council, Snowy River and Monaro Shires attended.
